NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--Nov. 26--Peninsula firms will ring in the new year with the same kind of hiring plans that they had for the current quarter.
Manpower's survey found 20 percent of the firms planned to increase their staffs in the first quarter, and 10 percent planned cuts. The overwhelming majority -70 percent -- expected no changes.
The modest hiring plans are no surprise, said Kathleen Makepeace, a Manpower spokeswoman. The January-through-March period typically is a slow time for beefing up staff. Education and public administration are two categories that are expected to add jobs.
