A TORY MP who claimed expenses for clearing his moat yesterday announced he would stand down at the next General Election.

Douglas Hogg said he had decided not to run for Parliament again following outrage over his decision to claim [pounds sterling]2,200 of taxpayers' money for the work at his 13th century country mansion.

Mr Hogg, an MP for 30 years, appears to have jumped before he was pushed. His claim symbolised the excesses - and weaknesses - of the MPs' lavish expenses system.

David Cameron had earlier given the green light to local party associations to oust errant MPs.
