Article: Shura Council warned to shelve new law.

MPs yesterday warned the Shura Council that a new electricity and water law would be shelved if it was passed with certain amendments.

They disputed four amendments in the government-drafted law, saying they agreed with the council on the rest of the articles.

They include a provision that would grant the Cabinet the right to give exemptions to electricity and water bill payments.

MPs said they fear that it would be misused, with the rich benefiting rather than the poor. They also expressed their disapproval with the council's decision to drop an amendment that would have stopped the government from cutting electricity and water without a court ...
