TWO of the world's major railway institutions, German Rail (DB) and the International Union of Railways (UIC), are starting afresh with new top managers being appointed in the wake of serious internal problems. In both cases, the new managers face major challenges to repair the damage inflicted on their organisations and set a new course.
The crisis at DB stems from a series of internal investigations during the last few years designed to root out corruption but which led to virtually every member of the 240,000-strong workforce being spied upon. This culminated in DB's CEO Mr Hartmut Mehdorn tendering his resignation.
But there could be other reasons ...
