QUIETLY, without any violence, without much international attention, the good folk of Malawi went to the polls this week to vote in general and presidential elections, in that beautiful land's 15th year of democracy.

At the time of writing this column, it seemed almost certain that President Bingu wa Mutharika would win, based on his record of turning Malawi into a net food exporter with three years of growth above seven percent.
