JOHANNESBURG: Veteran advocate Ismael Semenya has resigned as chairman of the Johannesburg Bar over its selection process for senior counsel, which he believes has become "toxic" and "abominable" in part.
"I cannot in good conscience be the face of a process so jaundiced," he said in his resignation letter dated May 14, in which he also called for the system to be revised.
The Johannesburg Bar is the largest in the country, with more than 600 advocates, including some of the most respected silks (senior counsel) and junior counsel.
