To prepare for the role, Kate shadowed some journalists to help her understand the job.
"I went to The LA Times and was allowed to follow around two female reporters there," she begins.
"They were really helpful, they were great and I got to sit in on their editorial meeting and take my little notes."
The film also required Kate to do her own stunts during a fight scene when her character is sent to prison.
But she was well protected with lots of padding.
