Introduction

Elizabeth Garrett was born in 1836 in Alderburgh, Suffolk. Her father, and great supporter, was a wealthy grain merchant. After being educated at home and then at a boarding school for ladies, Elizabeth joined the Society for Promoting the Employment of Women. Through this, in 1859 she met, and was inspired by, Dr Elizabeth Blackwell (1821-1910), an Englishwoman who had been educated in the USA. Her application having been rejected by a number of medical schools, Blackwell was eventually accepted by a small college in New York State, the Geneva College of Medicine, which ran a two-year course. Here she qualified MD in 1849 with the highest marks.
