Recently I spoke with a friend of mine -- a lifelong Taoseno old enough to have one foot squarely in traditional Taos and the other groping for a toehold in today's rapidly changing topography.
"The problem with today's kids," he allowed, "is they have no respect for their elders. What's missing anymore is the chicote (switch). A few good whacks with that, and a kid's going to show you the respect you deserve."
Of course I instantly recognized the theory, since it was played out on my own bare backside more than once, albeit with a stiff hairbrush. No doubt about it: The beatings forced compliance on my part.
