We turned our 25-foot Seaswirl cruiser hard to starboard to pull off the swift Columbia River and approach the towering concrete walls of Bonneville Lock. I picked up the VHF radio mike and tried hailing the lockmaster for permission to lock through. Nothing. Several more tries brought no results.
Apparently our radio had fallen victim to the heavy barrage of rain showers that had marked the painstakingly slow pace of a Pacific storm moving inland. Our Bimini top afforded little protection for the radio mounted below the steering wheel. Draping plastic over it when we weren't using it obviously wasn't enough to keep it dry.
Because not all boats have VHF ...
