An annual audited report of newspaper circulation shows slight gains for Detroit's two dailies, which still face a long climb back to readership levels before the strike.
Earlier this month, the Audit Bureau of Circulations reported paid circulation of 239,853 for the 12 months ending March 31 for The Detroit News, compared with 225,260 the previous year. The bureau reported circulation of 365,790 for the Detroit Free Press, up from 351,438 the previous year. The papers' combined circulation on Sunday was 796,468, compared with 769,594 the previous year.
Because of the strike that began 26 months ago, the 1996 audit covered only three months.
