In Japan, Babey Moulton and Backen, Arrigoni & Ross collaborate on a new breed of retirement community.
Sun City Kanagawa is a continuing care retirement community modeled on American counterparts. The concept, once foreign to a culture based on an extended family structure, is becoming increasingly embraced as Japanese society is experiencing a breakdown in this once sacrosanct tradition. "Seniors are worried about their futures," says Babey Moulton principal in charge Gerry Jue. "They are buying these luxury condos when they are healthy and with their friends. These facilities are a huge market in Japan. They are very competitive and they are market driven."
