The appointments of Siphiwe Nyanda and Pravin Gordhan as ministers in President Jacob Zuma's cabinet have resuscitated memories of one of the ANC's most secret plans. And the possible revival of Operation Vula in the political imagination may be further inspired by the rumoured return to centrestage of one of the party's most controversial and colourful figures: Mo Shaik.
Operation Vula, which was launched in the late 1980s, and of which Nyanda - now the minister of communications - was a leader along with Shaik and ANC veterans like Mac Maharaj and Ronnie Kasrils, is part of the romantic lore of the liberation movement.
