Novelist Tilly Bagshawe, 35, shocked her Catholic boarding school by becoming pregnant at 17. She was expelled, but she still managed to take her A-levels and win a place at Cambridge, where she went as a single mother with one-year-old Persephone (now known as Sefi) in tow. She and Sefi's father broke up while she was pregnant, and he has not played a part in Sefi's upbringing.
