BUSTARDS are finally getting the attention they need to ensure their survival.
Conservationists met in Johannesburg last week to discuss the threat to the cumbersome bird.
Despite six of the 10 species of bustard in South Africa being listed in the Red Data Book as near endangered, they receive little attention because of their lack of a "glamour factor", an important part of getting funding for research.
Now, however, BirdLife South Africa has formed a Bustard Working Group particularly concerned with Ludwig's Bustard, a large, heavy bird with relatively small wings, found in the Karoo.
