MacIntosh Academy is a combined middle and high school in one of the poorest counties in Georgia. MacIntosh County is a few miles from the Atlantic coast, just north of the prosperous beach resorts of Jekyll and Sea Islands. But their economies are light years apart. The average MacIntosh County resident makes just a little over $12,000, and industry is almost nonexistent.

Until this year, the high school was a reflection of the county. There wasn't a lot to brag about. Many parents paid tuition for their children to attend school in Brunswick, across the county line. Not many MacIntosh students went to college, and the few who took the SAT scored an average 723.
