DOG owners were put on alert last night after the first case of a potentially deadly worm disease was recorded in Scotland.
Experts say the massive rise in the fox population in urban areas is helping to spread lungworm, which causes fits, vomiting and diarrhoea among domestic animals.
The alarm was raised after a dog owner in Renfrew was told by vets that his one-year-old Weimaraner hunting dog Oscar was suffering from lungworm.
The incident, which occurred last year, is reported in the latest edition of the Journal of Small Animal Medicine.
