Steamboat's annual carnival is the ultimate midwinter party.
It's every public works director's most perverse fantasy come to life. For two topsy-turvy days each winter, Steamboat Springs' snowplows run in reverse, in a manner of speaking. I watch as they move fluffy, white mounds from the banks beside Twenty Mile Road back to the middle of Lincoln Avenue, the town's main street, and methodically spread the snow from curb to curb. It's time again for America's oldest winter carnival west of the Mississippi.
