BOSTON - These days happen at Fenway over the course of the long baseball season, but for some reason, they seem to happen on Sunday afternoons more than at any other times.
Home runs that were, home runs that were not. Thunder, lightning, rain, hail, doomsday clouds. Rundowns, knuckleballs, clutch hits by backup catchers, no hits by designated hitters and a pitch that went 15 feet.
When the day was over, the Red Sox had beaten the Mets, 12-5, and for the first time in 2009 were in sole possession of first place in the AL East, both the Blue Jays and Yankees having lost.
