Cannes, May. 24 -- Austrian director Michael Haneke beat stiff competition from American director Quentin Tarantino and celebrated Danish director Lars von Trier to win the Palme d'Or for his First World War-eve drama 'The White Ribbon' at the 62nd Cannes film festival.
Haneke had earlier won the Best Director award at Cannes in 2005 for 'Hidden' and the Grand Prix in 2001 for 'The Pianist'. 'The White Ribbon', which was shot completely in black and white, tells the story of a string of strange and violent incidents happening in a tiny village in northern Germany only months before the First World War.
