The peso weakened against the dollar yesterday, despite opening strong in early trade, due to strong demand for the dollar.

The peso closed at P47.17 per dollar, down by 13 centavos from Friday's close of P47.04.

The local unit opened strong at P46.95 per dollar and reached a high of P46.91 in intraday trade as the dollar remained weak across currencies.

But towards the afternoon, the peso weakened to P47.17, eventually closing at this level.

The currency's opening price was its strongest since Feb. 10, when the peso closed at P46.79 to a dollar.
