Lieutenant-General Vladimir Shamanov was yesterday appointed commander of Airborne Troops. This was confirmed by Colonel Aleksandr Drobyshevskiy, official Ministry of Defence spokesman. Hero of Russia Vladimir Shamanov gained fame during the two Chechen campaigns and was a one-term governor of Ulyanovsk Oblast. In 2007 he was brought back from the reserve to the Armed Forces.
