I'M lying on the hot "navel stone" of the Cemberlitas hammam, a 500-year-old Turkish bath in Istanbul.

Staring at the sunlight streaming through small holes in the domed roof feels like being on the inside of a giant salt shaker.

Then the masseur - built like a wrestler - slaps me on the shoulder and barks: "You Spanish?" I'm in no position to argue. Earlier, as I'd entered the marble hot-room, an Israeli fella from our group was screaming like a baby as a masseur walked up and down his spine.

I cross my fingers and hope my man's massage technique is better than his geography.
