WASHINGTON--Dec. 10--Minnesota continues to be shortchanged in federal spending.
The state ranked 49th among the 50 states in federal spending per capita in fiscal 1996, ahead only of its neighbor Wisconsin, the Northeast-Midwest Institute reported in a study released Tuesday.
The federal government spent $18.9 billion in Minnesota last year, or $4,048 per capita, the study said. By contrast, the average Minnesotan paid $5,563 in 1996 federal taxes, or $203 more than the average U.S. citizen. Minnesotans had the 15th highest per-capita federal tax burden in the nation.
