The long handled brass Turkish Cezve, still manufactured and sold in the Egyptian spice market of Istanbul has come in different sizes for hundreds of years. Metal strainers (filters) predate coffee brewing, as they were known to have been used in Middle Eastern food preparation in the first millennia BC. Melitta Benz' first patent for a coffee brew-cone is dated 1932, but the company's great success came after WWII and by the 1970s Melitta, and its competitors, lead the way for single service culinary quality coffee in U.S. home kitchens.
