Tire dealers Dave Richards and Randy Winters both are keeping a steady stream of used tires in stock as rising unemployment has created a customer pool looking for bargains.
Mr. Richards, president of Canton Bandag Co. in Canton, Ohio, said requests for used tires have gone from twice a month to three times a week, and he said he believes this trend is a "great barometer for the economy.
Since the second half of 2007, Mr. Richards said he has noticed a rise in used tire sales, but rather than increase his used tire inventory, he's relying on the tireswith some tread still leftthat come off vehicles at his dealership. ...
