Article: The European Patent Office Upholds the Validity of Coflexip Stena Offshore's VLS Patent

PARIS, France, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Coflexip Stena Offshore (Nasdaq: CXIPY) announced today that following a hearing in Munich on 16 October 1997, the European Patent Office has rejected Stolt Comex Seaway's (SCS) opposition to Coflexip S.A.'s European patent no. 478742. In the meantime, an action for infringement commenced by Coflexip Stena Offshore against Stolt Comex Seaway is proceeding before the English High Court. The patent relates to Coflexip Stena Offshore's VLS (vertical lay spread) system developed for laying flexible pipe in deep waters. In 1995, SCS filed an opposition to Coflexip's patent.
