A minimum five to 10 percent of calories in the diet should be obtained from omega-6 fatty acids, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommended in a scientific advisory issued in January 2009. A polyunsaturated fat, omega-6 is primarily found in nuts, seeds and vegetable-, nut- and seed-based cooking oils. (See chart, right). A meta-analysis of randomized, controlled studies showed that people who ate the most omega-6 fatty acids had the least amount of heart disease, and that people with heart disease had lower levels of omega-6 than healthy people.
