Somali piracy is not currently an energy security problem, but it could pose a potential threat if its scale should increase or if terrorists copy the idea, a new report concludes.
The study published by Securing America's Future Energy (Safe), a Washington-based non-profit organization committed to reducing America's dependence on oil, says the global energy infrastructure is not under imminent threat from pirates. However, it adds that vital maritime transit chokepoints would be vulnerable if piracy were to proliferate or change its nature.
