WORCESTER - Coming from all corners of the earth, nearly 500 immigrants stood in the Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts yesterday and became U.S. citizens.
Sam U. Ly, dressed in his U.S. Army uniform and holding an American flag, was one of them. He held up his right hand and pledged his allegiance to the United States. But in one sense, he'd already made his commitment to the country a year before, by joining the Army.
"The way I see it, this is the land of opportunity," he said, when asked about what becoming a citizen meant. "It has given me a lot, and I think it's time to give something back."
