THE ACTOR Sir John Mills and his wife, the writer Mary Haley Bell, asked me to dinner at their London house. They had a special treat for me, they said. It was a Triple-A-list occasion in the Sixties, with some of the biggest names in cinema, including the likes of director David Lean, actor Jack Hawkins, Noel Coward and Richard Attenborough.
