ON THE 56th anniversary of Hillary's ascent of Everest, Ireland continued their upward climb under their own mountaineer, Sherpa Giovanni Trapattoni, in south-west London last night.
In terms of the players available to him, Trapattoni embarked on the Group 8 climb kitted out with little more than a primus stove, sleeping bag and a stick of chocolate.
But each hill has been crested, each challenge met square on and Trapattoni now finds himself at base camp preparing for a big push for the summit.
