Ever since it opened in 1924, the American Gallery of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, has had to cope with a sense of detachment. Originally it was a separate structure in a garden, linked to the north-west corner of the museum by a first-floor corridor. Even after the completion in 1980 of a spacious new link to the main building, the Charles Engelhard Court, the American Galleries still felt tucked away, and could be approached only indirectly, by way of the Arms and Armor Gallery or the Egyptian Temple of Dendur.
