Isocyanate suppliers at UTECH Europe indicated that there is a question mark over the future viability of some smaller plants and players in the TDI (toluene diisocyanate) business, partly because of surplus capacity and low prices, and also as a result of the current trend for investment in much bigger plants.

At Swedish TDI supplier Perstorp, volumes have improved since December, but price-wise, the situation is rather difficult, said Fabrice Garrigue, marketing manager for Perstorp's isocyanates business.

Last year, the ICIS Pricing reference had TDI at 2700-2800 [euro]/tonne and it is now down to 1800-1900 ...
