On Valentine's Day 1945, Dresden lay in ruins as a result of one of World War II's iconic air raids. But just like Coventry and St. Petersburg, it has been rebuilt over time and is once again one of Europe's most magnificent cities.
Situated on either side of the River Elbe, Dresden is the capital of Saxony, one of the six German states that comprised the former German Democratic Republic before the reunification following the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. While one can still see some evidence of drab "Communist modern" architecture, Dresden has returned to its former glory and is completely integrated into the German Federal Republic.
