Chromates play an important role in a variety of industries as they coat metal components and provide protection from corrosion.
Until relatively recently, hexavalent chromates have been widely used for this task, especially because of their exceptional protection of aluminium and aluminium alloys. In the automotive industry, for example, it has been estimated that between four and seven grams of hexavalent coatings have been used on each new vehicle.
