Doing a trade show, either as an exhibitor or an attendee, can be a big, high-cost hassle with variable payoff. According to Tradeshow Week, the average mid- to large-sized company spends about $550,000 a year on trade shows, from leasing space to staffing booths. In today's tough economy, companies are cutting back on trade shows to save money or explore lower-cost, Internet-based marketing strategies.
Budgets for trade show exhibiting are expected to decline 17 percent this year, and the number of trade shows that exhibitors are planning to participate in likely will drop by about the same amount.
