One of the most striking changes we have seen over the 11 years that Employee Benefits has been conducting annual research into UK employers' healthcare strategies is the fall in the number of bogus or unauthorised absences.
In particular, employers appear to have got to grips with staff absence caused by caring or domestic issues. For example, respondents to our 2000 healthcare research said personal problems (39%) and family responsibilities (30%) were the second and third highest causes of absence. This year, 18% of respondents cited childcare as a cause and just 7% said work-life balance was an issue.
