Jan. 5--CONTROL DATA'S PLATO LIVES ON: Let's begin the new year with a bit of revisionism.
Some people still believe that "PLATO," Control Data Corp.'s massive attempt during the 1970s and 1980s to apply computer technology in education, was an unqualified and spectacular flop.
Another view, much closer to the mark: PLATO was a concept and a vision that has now become the reality.
Bill Norris, the retired founder of Control Data Corp. (CDC) and now head of the William C. Norris Institute, makes the latter argument in a recent newsletter headlined "PLATO pioneered widespread improvements in education and training."
