The most common reason to give antibiotics to children is otitis media, or ear infection. Yet there is only limited scientific evidence to guide physicians in choosing which antibiotic to prescribe. Because there is also a lack of information about physicians prescribing patterns for this common childhood illness, Stephen Berman, MD., and colleagues at several medical centers in Denver, studied over 5,000 children treated for otitis media while enrolled in Colorados Medicaid program information (Pediatrics, October 1997).
