After circling one another warily for months, British Petroleum Co. plc (BP), Royal Dutch/Shell Group and a clutch of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are working to find a modus vivendi that will accommodate both the commercial ambitions of the oil companies and the NGOs' desire to see changes in the way the companies do business.
Both European majors have embarked on wide-ranging reviews -- in consultation with NGOs -- of ways to monitor the social and environmental impact of their operations.
