On 22 September Prime Minister Howard told the State Council of the Queensland Liberal Party that the election of his government had released Australians from the grip of political correctness to "speak a little more freely and a little more openly about what they feel". Less than a fortnight earlier the Independent MHR for Oxley, Pauline Hanson, had made a much publicised maiden speech. In it she warned of the dangers of Asian immigrants swamping Australia, lambasted "reverse racism" and attacked the taxpayer-funded industry servicing Aborigines.
