What did Princess Diana mean to us? Was she, as she hoped, our Queen of Hearts? Or a vacuous clothes-horse inflated by the media attention she claimed to hate? Did she symbolise the passive Cinderella women are taught to copy, whose marriage to Prince Charming brings, nowadays, unhappiness ever after? Or a loving mother courageously striving to express compassion extending from the deer her son hunted to other mothers' children maimed by the landmines England too manufactures?
We cannot know "the" answers to these questions since we each find our own answers (mine might be, though the questions are contradictory, "All of the above"). But I suspect we know the ...
