Amidst a tumultuous time for affirmative action initiatives, voters in Houston provided support for affirmative action.
Houston voters rejected a proposal that would have ended a program that steers 20 percent of the city's contracts to firms run by minorities and women. The proposal was rejected 54 percent to 46 percent.
The rejected proposal was very similar to California's Proposition 209, which bans affirmative action in government programs.
Houston voters may send a message to others that the strong movement to end affirmative action can be stopped.
