A workstation is not a precisely defined term. It is perhaps best described both by attributes and those features that distinguish it from other types of computers. The questionnaire submitted to manufacturers offered the following guidelines, "The workstation will generally possess the following features: it is designed to operate in a network environment; Unix or a Unix-based language is employed; the central processor is based on reduced-instruction-set computing (RISC) architecture; and the components and enclosure are selected to enable operation in harsh environments."
