By the time he met the teenaged Don Bachardy on the beach in Santa Monica in the late 1940s, Christopher Isherwood was a famous, middle-aged writer. Guido Santi and Tina Mascara's Chris and Don: A Love Story chronicles their forty-year relationship until Isherwood's death in 1986. Now a celebrated portraitist, Bachardy survives, and his recounting of their relationship is the film's spine. Formally, the film is a fairly conventional biographical documentary, featuring talking heads, archival footage from the period, and newly shot material of the present-day subjects and settings.
