Introduction
The importance of high-latitude regions in the detection of global climate change is widely acknowledged, as areas of the Arctic and Antarctic have experienced more climate warming during the last ~50 years than any other regions on Earth (Turner et al. 2007). Global climate models predict that future climate change will continue to be amplified in polar regions (Arctic Climate Impact Assessment 2005; Anisimov et al. 2007).
