TAHEN, CAMBODIA * Shopkeepers in the Spanish city of Gijon are selling handicrafts and souvenirs made in this remote Cambodian village to help people here build an irrigation system that will for the first time give them a stable, year-round supply of water.
The project, called "A Drop of Hope," is sponsored by the apostolic prefect of Battambang, Cambodia, which is led by a Spanish Jesuit, Msgr. Enrique Figaredo.
Work on the project began in February. It entails widening the Sangke River and installing four water gates along about 2.5 miles of the stream. The project is expected to be completed in 2011 for a total cost of $100,000. Helping raise funds ...
