The Seattle Mariners have selected Dustin Ackley, a left-handed hitting outfielder from the University of North Carolina, with the second pick in Tuesday's amateur baseball draft.
Ackley, 6-foot-1, 184 pounds, has been playing first base after undergoing Tommy John surgery in his throwing arm last year, but is regarded as the best pure hitter in the draft and is viewed strictly as an outfielder by the Mariners.
