Kraft Foods Inc. and Chicago's numerous candy manufacturers have won a round in their long-running battle with the sugar industry over import restrictions.
A federal committee that handles trade data-collection issues agreed last week to tighten the definition of refined sugar, a move expected to boost imports and lower costs for big sugar users. The change could provide some relief for local food and candy companies burdened by soaring domestic sugar prices, which have eaten into profits and hurt their competitiveness.
